Editorial - Thanks RSpen26909

I found an old letter (couple years old) that I wrote to the editor of York, PA’s local newspaper in response to the rejection of one of my editorials. Let me "splain"—I wrote a piece in support of Welfare Reform just after it was signed into law. I received a call from the paper early the following week saying they wanted to print my thoughts on the subject in the Editorials section of the Sunday Newspaper. I mean, right there with George Will and Paul Greenburg! Also, that they would schedule me to come down and get my picture taken to put along side the editorial. I was pretty damn happy! As it turned out, this liberal paper just couldn’t get themselves to publish an article in support of Welfare Reform and went with an article "bashing" the Bill. They liked my facts on the bill but they just couldn’t share them with the "little people" (their subscribers). After all, they had spent so much time conditioning their readers to be wary of the children/senior citizen hating, Spotted-Owl eating, rightwing wackos. They didn’t want to take the chance of letting their readers know that me, an ordinary citizen, was supporting the Welfare Reform Act. Now, they had no problem with George Will because they had him billed as a famous right-wing "wacko" writer. So, when Sunday came and I saw that they not only decided against publishing my editorial but, rather, publish writtings completely at the other end of the spectrum I was pissed!!! After reading the piece slamming Welfare reform (from some "broad" in Pittsburg), kicking the dog and stealing candy from the neighbors kid …. I responded:

I am writing in response to the article written by Sally Kalson—a .k.a. : "liberal babe". In this article we’re told of all the terrible things that will happen to America if welfare recipients are "forced" to find jobs and support themselves and their families. Oh, Puuhhhlllllease!! I especially loathed the part about what happens when, after two years, welfare recipients are "tossed off" of the welfare rolls. First, and let’s get it straight, the Welfare Reform Act deals with ABLE-BODIED welfare recipients. If an able-bodied individual needs to be "tossed off" of welfare after being given two years to find employment (not to mention the time already spent on welfare) they’ve got bigger problems than the Welfare Reform Act. The Welfare Reform Act stops paying people to be worthless human beings. To have to force able-bodied Americans, in this land of opportunity, to be self-sufficient is an embarrassment to the planet. Liberals have apparently given up on these people and are content just sweeping them under the rug of welfare dependency.

Let’s talk about "The Children"—It’s not welfare reform that’s going to hurt the children. It’s their deadbeat parents. These folks (evidently) consider children as just something annoying that happens nine months after having some "fun". These individuals don’t know how to take care of themselves. How can they possibly take care of a child? Fact is: They can’t. Why, there oughta a law against people who can’t take care of children!! Wait…..there is!! It’s called child abuse. We see it and hear about it every day. Until these people realize responsibility, these children should be taken from them and placed with "families" who have a clue as to raising children. It’s not "mean-spirited", it’s "reality". This Welfare Reform Act is supported by so many not because we’re mean-spirited, it’s because we refuse to give up on people who have given up on themselves.
